As a teacher managing problem behavior in your classroom can be one of the most challenging tasks. Behavior problems can range from disruption of lessons to acts of violence against fellow students and teachers. Children’s emotional setbacks and life challenges can also contribute to behavior issues at school. A study done by the Justice Center and the Public Policy Research Institute found that six out of ten students suffered from an “emotional disturbance” and were expelled or suspended between seventh and twelfth grade (Firke, 2011). This same study showed that discipline varied greatly between schools. This report also revealed the urgent need for a more thoughtful technique in school discipline policies. Punishment and negative reinforcement can be effective, to stop the problem behavior up front. Yet in the long run positive reinforcement of good behaviors is a more effective way to teach children alternative and more functional behaviors. Behavior theory is based on the belief that all human behavior is learned. Behavior theory states that behavior followed by pleasant consequences tends to be repeated, and thereby learned (Bently). Instead of focusing on punishment of negative behavior, teachers could take this approach and focus on positive behavior. For example, if a teacher is having problems with a kid tipping in his chair, she could take one of two approaches. She could give the child a bad mark every time the legs of his chair leave the ground or she could give the child a good mark every time his chair legs stay on the ground. Either approach could work, yet focusing on positive reinforcement like that described by the Behavior Modification Theory, will increase the chances of future positive behavior. Behavior modification techniques aim to manipulate the antecedents and consequences of behavior so that the likelihood of appropriate behavior is increased and inappropriate behavior is decreased (Smith). Building Classroom Discipline Essay
In the past few years it seems that schools have really lost touch with the discipline of students. With the increasing frequency of school shootings and acts of violence it seems that the students are running the show instead of the teachers and administrators. There are many factors that are involved in creating a great classroom or a horrible classroom. From the way the teachers punish misbehaving students or the way they reward them when they do something right, to how involved the parents are with their children's education. The purpose of this paper is to explain how classroom management, when used effectively by the teacher, can produce an excellent learning environment for students.
According to C.M. Charles, the author of "Building Classroom Discipline," the definition of discipline is, "what teachers do to help students behave acceptably in school (1999,p3)." Discipline is associated to misbehavior, wherever misbehavior is found, and discipline is needed. The main goals of discipline are to prevent, suppress and redirect misbehavior. Students can also be cruel and disruptive, which can deny the purpose of learning in the classroom. Another goal of discipline is to help students control their own behavior in and outside the classroom (Charles, 1999). My own definition of discipline is using any means necessary to keep a classroom organized, productive and accessible for learning. Discipline is necessary in a classroom, to give students an opportunity to learn to there fullest. Without discipline, the classroom would be a place where teachers could not perform their job but a place for them to baby-sit misbehaved children.
Teacher quality is the most important issue when dealing with how effective a classroom will be. According to Robert Glenn, an educational administrator for 24 years, there are many things needed to have a successful atmosphere. The most important one is establishing successful classroom management, the first day of classes it is important for the teacher to make rules that he or she will enforce and let the students know that they will be responsible for there actions. One is being organized, this is an important aspect because if a teacher is well organized then they have more time to help the students and pay attention to there needs. The last thing that Glenn said that is important is show a good attitude, if a teacher is in a bad mood the student will feel intimidated and afraid to approach there professor with a question. A student will feel better about confronting teacher in a good mood with a concern they might have. Many other traits that he listed are very important when looking for new teachers. (Glenn, 2001)
